Jez Claustres: The Tower
'The Tower' is a conceptual art piece concerned with change and movement within a particular space through time. Although in the short term buildings roads etc. do not alter, the occupiers of a particular space (however large or small) change from one moment to the next. Jez Claustres created 'The Tower' using Final Cut Express to crop and layer a 29 second clip onto itself. Each segment of the image is a separate layer, forming a pyramid of layers on the Final Cut timeline. In order to construct such a multi-layered film each square has been carefully calculated and cropped. Careful planning was also needed In order to avoid various adjacent segments commencing at the same time, this was solved by constructing the timeline in a lattice form, each clip beginning a fraction after or before all others. The result is a clip which plays once then divides into two segments playing at slightly different times. This image then plays once more before dividing into quarters, then sixteenths, and finally into sixty-fourths. It then begins to reform in reverse order.
