Unleashing the book inside you
When I wrote 100 Years of Ermintrude - which you can watch on Pod3.tv here, the words just flew out of my brain on to the keyboard.
I was so fascinated by the process of what had happened that I started to research the whole field of consciousness and creativity. I learned that the creative right hemisphere of the brain needs to get the logical left hemisphere out of the way before it can be unleashed.
Like a devil on your shoulder (and it's always the left), the left hemisphere tells you things like "Don't be stupid, nobody will read your book, you're not good enough" or "You don't have time to write a book".
By engaging in regular meditation, these issues start to vanish as it encourages synchronisation of the hemispheres and 'whole brain thinking'. Something else occurs though that is almost magical - new thoughts, inspirations and coincidences start coming 'from nowhere' that help the writing process just when you seem to need it.
Armed with this new information I discovered, I used it purposely as a technique for when I wrote the sequels. I found I would look forward to writing as I wouldn't 'know' what was going to happen next in my own stories (much like reading a gripping page turner).
The biggest surprise I got though was that I could actually teach other people how to do this AND do it remotely over Skype to any author anywhere in the world.
I've now set up a mentoring programme to help other authors learn this technique via workshops, face to face and phone tutoring - I might even write a book about it next year too !!
Here's what one client said about it:
"There is no other way to write a book. Tom injects a certain magic to the whole process.
His insights, intuition and inspiration are invaluable – from thinking I couldn’t write a book to suddenly finding the words flowing was fantastic.
Tom has an amazing way of seeing the things that you don’t see during the writing process, which helps unblock those ‘writers block’ moments.
He mentors you in assembling your material in the best way possible, leading to the addition of dimensions that you had not even thought of yet. I now have restored belief in my writing ability and creativity." - Jo Simpson, Dubai
