Backing the Bacon! - Celebrity Chefs and Hundreds of Restaurants are Putting British Bacon on the Menu for Save Our Bacon Nation

LONDON, April 25/PRNewswire/ -- UK Restaurants join forces to mark Save Our Bacon National Restaurant Week (Monday 28th April-Sunday 4th May). From top London venues such as The Ivy and St John, to country pubs and cafés, hundreds of chefs will be putting special British pork dishes on menus.

Waitrose Food Illustrated magazine's Save Our Bacon campaign highlights the problems facing British pig farmers, who currently lose GBP26 on every pig sold.

"We've all got to take responsibility for the great British pig," says chef Fergus Henderson. Fergus is putting a Gloucester Old Spot bacon sandwich on the menu at St John.

Celebrity chefs backing Save Our Bacon National Restaurant Week include Michelin-starred chefs Tom Aikens, Heston Blumenthal, Raymond Blanc, Angela Hartnett.

Heston Blumenthal says: "It's vital that we as restaurateurs unite behind British pig farmers at this difficult time. It is people like us that can make a difference."

William Sitwell, editor of Waitrose Food Illustrated, "The amazing number of restaurants taking part in the Save Our Bacon National Restaurant Week shows the extraordinary depth of feeling that chefs and restaurant owners have about the plight of British pig farmers. This is the moment that really matters in this campaign: British restaurants are telling diners 'Put British pork on your fork!' "
